Superstar Rajinikanth ‘s debut film in Hindi Andhaa Kanoon was a remake of Vijayakanth’s ‘Sattum Oru Iruttarai’ directed by SA Chandrashekar. The film was a huge hit & was remade in Telugu Malayalam & Kannada, there also becoming super hits. Finally Andhaa Kanoon was the last & final version to be made.
Just before Rajini, Kamal made his Hindi debut with Ek Duuje Ke Liye, which became a sensational blockbuster. So with an South Indian hero being accepted nation wide, next Rajini also made a smashing entry in Hindi cinema. Andhaa Kanoon ran to 175 days in many places of North, 100 days in Chennai & 1 year in Mumbai. From 80’s with Rajini & Kamal becoming famous in Hindi, this gave a huge boost to south producers to make films in Hindi & remake their South films with Hindi heroes too.
In the South versions, Amitabh role was played by “character actors” but in Hindi Amitabh himself accepting to do a extended guest role really needs a good heart when he was ruling Bollywood single handedly. He could have easily rejected it but he did it for Rajini. When Amitabh met with a fatal injury in Coolie shooting, Andhaa Kanoon shooting was stopped, Rajini used to regularly visit Amitabh in the Breach Candy hospital.
At that period in Chennai, if you open any newspapers, at least 3 to 4 Rajini films were running in the city. Paayum Puli was running at Bala Abirami, Thudikum Karangal was running at Devi Paradise, Andha Kanoon was running at Alankar & Thai Veedu at Kamala Safaire theatres.
