Best Performance Acting Category :- Dhanush , Trisha .
Best Director & Screenplay Writer of the year :- Durai Senthil Kumar
Verdict :- Dhanush is the pillar of Kodi backed by brilliant writing from Duraisenthilkumar! Dhanush’s swag is terrific in the film. Anupama looks cute and does justice to her role and Trisha delivers one of her lifetime best performance. Superb comeback from Dhanush and is sure to rock the masses.
Dhanush is someone who can easily switch between being an actor and a star. Kodi while predominantly catering to the sensibilities of the latter, surely does have a substantial scope for the former. The actor is in fine form playing a dual role for the first time. He has neatly underplayed the ‘mass’ moments. Trisha is pretty decent in a role that is the pivot around which the film revolves.Try recollecting by scratching your head all you can and such substantial roles for a leading lady in mainstream Tamil cinema could still probably be only a single digit number.
Durai Senthilkumar’s acumen is on display throughout Kodi. As easy as it may sound, it is quite a task to make these formula films with a certain amount of conviction. It is good to see the director give his female characters consistently important roles.Having a heroine whose maturity level is beyond a sixth standard student itself seems like ‘asking for the moon’ these days. Ethirneechal and Kaaki Sattai too had independent working women who had other things to do apart from being around the hero. The mandatory romance between Dhanush and Anupama Parameswaran is also quite enjoyable despite not being very novel.
The way most of the characters are not painted either black or white is such a welcome departure. Take even the role of Dhanush for instance. At places when he is not sure whether he actually belongs to the morally correct side he does not behave in haste but takes measured steps. This is a far cry from what would usually happen in the hero worshiping vehicles that we are attuned to. The twists in the film work. They also do not seem totally out of the blue and we do realize the plausibility of them happening because of the way the characters have been developed. You see a leopard (blink-and-you-miss-it scenario) in tacky VFX in a romantic number and you wonder why. When you later understand as to why this was shown you cannot but at least appreciate the director for even thinking about this. It might not actually make a difference to the way we perceive the film but the very fact that some thought has gone into every aspect that is being shown on screen is definitely heartwarming.
Kodi is that hero driven vehicle that we have been yearning for. It is testimonial to the fact that you put in some effort in writing and formula films cannot be merely rubbished as assembly line products.
